The Electoral Commission says it respects the decision of the Supreme Court of Ghana in a case in which the opposition National Democratic Congress was challenging its decision to compile a new voter’s register.
The NDC had asked the court to declare the Commission’s decision as unconstitutional and of no legal effect.
Alternatively, it had also asked the court to rule that the decision by the Electoral Commission to exclude the old voter’s ID card as mean of identification for the new voter’s registration exercise was illegal.
But in a unanimous decision reached by a seven-member panel, the apex court dismissed the reliefs being sought by the NDC.
In a statement celebrating the ruling, the Electoral Commission says it respects the decision of the court and will continue with its voter’s registration exercise.
