EC boss, Jean Mensa given the clearance to compile a new voters’ register

The Supreme Court of Ghana has dismissed a case in which the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) was challenging the decision by the Electoral Commission to reject the old voter ID in its new registration exercise.

In a unanimous decision, the apex court has given the clearance to the Jean Mensa-led Commission to go ahead with its registration exercise.

The decision was taken by a seven-member panel presided over by Chief Justice Kwasi Anin Yeboah.

The other panel members are Justices Jones Dotse, Paul Baffoe Bonnie, Sule Gbagegbe, Samuel K. Marful-Sau, Nene Amegatcher, and Professor Ashie Kotey.

The court in its decision held the Commission is an independent body and will only be directed by the court if it acts contrary to the law.
