Mr President, on behalf of all Ghanaians, I greet you.
Many thanks for the bold initiative to institute some measures in a bid to arrest the current COVID-19 outbreak in Ghana.
Permit me to share my thoughts on your proposed measures as well as provide you some ideas to complement your efforts.
On the issue of burials, Mr. President, ban all burials except for an unlikely ‘COVID-19 related death’. The current directive seems incomplete – “Private burials are permitted, but with limited numbers, not exceeding twenty-five (25) in attendance.” Your proposed maximum 25 people may be infected too. Imagine 50 funerals in Greater Accra region alone, thus, 1,250 people who may be exposed to the virus. That’s a lot. What measures are in place to prevent these 25 people from being infected?
Mr President, should we record a related COVID-19 death, I kindly suggest only health experts be allowed to undertake the burials as was the case of EBOLA in our sister countries. The related protocols should be made known to the public.
Mr. President, on the issue of travel ban, why is the travel permit limited to only countries that have recorded at least 200 cases of COVID-19? This must be revised to be any country that has ANY record of COVID-19. The situation here is that this is a new strain of virus with widespread negative impacts and one is too many a case to be discounted, how much more 200.
Mr. President, why not the state put up structures at Accra Sports stadium etc to quarantine anyone arriving in the county for the specified 2 weeks period you proposed? The directive “There is now going to be a mandatory 14-days self-quarantine for persons who are otherwise allowed to enter the Ghanaian jurisdiction,” “Guidelines for the self-quarantine will be available at the Ghanaian point of entry,” should be made known to the public, not only be placed at the point of entries. Let’s know what to expect at our points of entries.
Mr. president, I hereby suggest other for your consideration in a bid to ensure we are able to detect and spur interest in combating the virus:
1. Institute free COVID-19 testing for all citizens, every two weeks
2. Provide the MTTD protective equipment and an infrared thermometer that permits temperature measurement from a distance without contact with the person being measured. This will aid voluntary testing on our roads as well as complement the works of health practitioners.
3. Institute clear cut specific protocol for security officers because at this point in time, their services will be highly required and they will be in constant touch with the public.
Many thanks Mr. President.
