UEW bites ‘ignorant’ Rawlings over mischievous VC exit call

Ex-president Jerry John Rawlings

The University of Education, Winneba (UEW) says a call by ex-president Jerry John Rawlings for its Vice-Chancellor to step down over events in the school was made out of ignorance.

The Univesity, in a statement Wednesday, said the former president’s commentary on events in the school betrays his ignorance and exposes the mischief of those who gave him the information.

Mr Rawlings has asked for the current UEW V-C, Reverend Professor Afful-Broni to step down during a durbar to climax the 38th anniversary of the 31st December Revolution held in Winneba last year.

“I understand there are investigations ongoing regarding the current Vice-Chancellor. It will be appropriate for the Council to request that he steps aside for fairness to prevail as has been the practice with other similar circumstances in the past. We should not allow the distortions of our history to continue. Everyone here who claims to be an adherent of the decade that stopped the socio-political decay in our country must recognize the calculated efforts to destroy the legacy that we all laid. Those who have allowed corruption to rear its ugly head, and permitted it to fester, want to belittle the discipline, the law and order we introduced into this country, so they can justify their corrupt tendencies,” he said.

The former president was commenting on events in the school that led to the removal of the former VC Professor Mawutor Avoke and four other colleagues.

But the University said Mr Rawlings was not properly briefed on events happening in the school.

“The University, again, wishes to state clearly to the general public and, in particular, ex-President Jerry John Rawlings that, the Vice-Chancellor, Rev. Fr. Anthony Afful-Broni is not under any form of investigation; no prima facie case of wrongdoing or misconduct has been established against him; and, no disciplinary action has been initiated against him by the Governing Council to warrant his stepping aside,” the statement said.

“It must be put on record that the figure 20 representing the number of persons claimed by ex-President, J. J. Rawlings as having been dismissed by the University totally betrays his ignorance and the mischief of those who fed him with such lies.”
